Dyslexia Note Taking Alternatives
08.27.07 (5:54 am)   [edit]

A lot of people with dyslexia can have trouble learning in class because they can’t take notes properly. This partially results from an unfortunate combination. A dyslexia symptoms test can often show that the student has dysgraphia as well, meaning that they have extreme difficulty in legibly writing. These two combine to terribly effect their education. Trying to write proper notes will require all of their attention, often so much attention that they aren’t able to listen to the lecture. There are a few ways to fix this situation though.

The teacher should find a volunteer in class who takes good notes and give them special carbonless notebook paper. It is a two sheet setup similar to carbon paper, without the messy aspect. It will record an exact copy of the volunteer’s notes without any extra effort on their part. Being able to study a lecture through good notes should really help with their dyslexia cure program, since reading confusing notes will only discourage them. If absolutely no one will volunteer then you should volunteer a copy of your lecture notes to serve as an aid. Some leniency should also be given in homework assignments. Once they learn to type, they should be allowed to type out an assignment when possible or dictate their responses to another person or a voice recognition program. These simple accommodations should be important steps in making sure that they have a good education experience.
